December is when Sri Lanka switches on. The south-west monsoon has long finished, the second inter-monsoon rains fade in the first ten days, and by mid-month the west coast, south coast, Cultural Triangle and hill country settle into the clear, dry weather that lasts until March. It is the single most popular month of the year to fly in — and the only one where Christmas and New Year pricing genuinely changes how you should plan.
The catch is that the island splits in two. While Bentota, Galle, Mirissa, Sigiriya and Ella enjoy sunshine, the north-east monsoon is soaking Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Arugam Bay. Plan a December trip around the south and centre and you get near-perfect conditions; plan it around the east and you spend the week indoors.

Tail end of the inter-monsoon. Expect a couple of short afternoon downpours on the south-west coast and in the hills. Prices are still shoulder-season and sites are quiet — the best-value week of the month.
Weather locks into peak-season mode: bright mornings, dry afternoons, calm seas. Hotels start filling and rates climb sharply from around the 18th.
