The Minneriya Elephant Gathering (Jul–Sep)

As the dry season peaks, hundreds of wild Asian elephants — often 200 to 300 individuals — walk out of the surrounding jungle onto the exposed grass bed of Minneriya reservoir to drink, bathe and socialise. National Geographic ranks it as one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on the planet, and it happens nowhere else. Depending on water levels the rangers rotate the safari to Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park, so book a driver who tracks the herd daily.

Whales & Dolphins by Coast

Mirissa (south coast): Blue whales and sperm whales, December to April. Boats leave at 06:30 for a 3–4 hour trip.
Trincomalee (east coast): Blue whales close to shore, May to September — often the best water-clarity sightings of the year.
Kalpitiya (north-west): Superpods of 1,000+ spinner dolphins, November to April.

Leopards, Sloth Bears & Birds

Yala Block 1 has the highest leopard density in the world, but it's also the busiest. If your priority is a leopard photo without a queue of jeeps, book Wilpattu in April–May when villus (natural lakes) attract cats and jeep numbers are half of Yala's. Sloth bears are hardest to see but peak with the palu fruit season in June–July, when they climb trees to feed.
